Originally the "Angel" but changed name to the "Six Bells" in 1735, and again to the "Eight Bells" in 1769-70 when two more bells was added to St. Mildred's church.

SATURDAY. JANUARY 12, 1929.

OLD INNS OF TENTERDEN. THE EIGHT BELLS - FORMERLY THE ANGEL.

In 1763 the churchwardens duly account for 1s. 4d. received for lands at the backside of the "Six Bells," and the same in 1769; but in 1770 it is for land behind the "Eight Bells," 1s. 4d."

The name was therefore undoubtedly changed at that time and so remains at the present day.

An old directory of 1836 stales that Charles and John Holland's waggon left the "Eight Bells" every morning for London, and on Thursday at 12 noon.

An weekly corn market was formerly held here on Fridays, but this has been discontinued for some years.
