Richard Lanes a seaman, was charged with stealing an Arctic medal from the house of John Leigh Wilson, of the "Cumberland Arms," Sheerness, on the 11th day of September. Mrs. Wilson (the chief witness in the case) stated that the prisoner went to the house on the morning in question with another young man named Cotter, and that he took the medal from a frame, whilst she was in an adjoining room. The prisoner then left the house and on Cotter calling him back, he refused to return. Mary Ann Ovenden (wife of Sergeant Ovenden) deposed that the prisoner came to her the same morning and left the medal in her hands, stating that he had paid 1s. for it and that he believed it had been stolen.
