PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton & Debi Birkin

Earliest 1861-

Brewers Arms

Latest 1861+

Matfield

This is listed in the census of 1861 where the licensee is referred to as a general shop-keeper, so I would think that this was just an off license. It was also addressed as Brenchley in that census.

Unfortunately no address is given and it could well be situated in Matfield.

Rob Neale suggests that this is indeed the same premises as the "Wheelwright's Arms," and that there has been some error in naming the premises. Perhaps William Smith was a brewer as well as licensee at the pub.

Debi Birkin follows up by saying:- "The "Brewers Arms" listed in Brenchley is almost certainly the same pub as the "Wheelwrights" at Matfield, as indicated by the Census of 1861 and states that it is sited next door to Matfield Forge which is where the "Wheelwrights Arms" is today.
