Kentish free house, dating back to 1713, run by owners Andrew & Denise
Turner and manageress, Nicola Owen, to traditional values and
standards..."

publicity postcards were printed, as her name has been blacked out on
this example. And the extra "e" in Luddesdowne? No idea why! |

Above label, 2001, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. The image shows the bottle
label of a commemorative beer that was brewed for the Cock by the very
short-lived Old Kent Brewery, which only operated from 2000 to 2003. The
actions at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift were fought on the 22nd/23rd
January 1879, so the year 2001 seems to be odd choice for an anniversary
celebrated in July! |
This pub can be traced back to 1706 when it was called the "King's
Head" but it changed name in 1715 to the "Plough
and Horseshoes" and again in 1735 to the name we see today.
Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information
would be appreciated.
I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it,
but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the
information will come from.

Friday.— (Before the Rev. G. Davies and T. H. Day and W. Gladdish,
Esqrs).
William Crowhurst, of Meopham, grocer, was convicted in a penalty of
£1 and 19s. 6d. costs, for having an unjust weight upon his
premises.
Sarah Baker, of Bush, grocer and baker, for having fifteen short
weights and an unjust weighing machine in her possession, was fined
£2 and 17s. fid. costs.
Richard Waterman, landlord of the "Cock" public-house, Luddesdown,
was convicted in a penalty of £1 and 18s. 6d. costs, for having six
deficient quart measures upon his premises.
