Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, Saturday 9 May 1857.

GRAVESEND.

On Monday last a respectably-dressed man entered the "Ship" public house, in Bath Street, and asked Mr. Gentry, the landlord, for some gin. He entered the smoking room, and then said he wanted some boiling water, Mr. Gently, on entering the room with the water, saw that the man had a paper in his hand, which on near approach he thought looked like oxalic acid, the nature and appearance of which he was well acquainted with. He took the parcel from the man, and challenged him with intent to commit suicide. This he denied, but looked confused and made off. The contents of the paper proved to be oxalic acid.

I am informed that the pub closed in 1964 to make way for the St George's shopping centre development.

I have just started to map out the pubs that exist or existed in Gravesend, but need local knowledge and photographs, old and current if you have any.

As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will be shown here.

Thanks for your co-operation. Every email is answered and all information referenced to the supplier.

This page will be updated as soon as further information is found.
