From The Era 9 September 1849.

"Crown," corner of Peter-street and William-street, Milton. Eliza Holland stated that she was the widow of Thomas Holland, who was many years a victualler in this borough, and bore a good character, and the application was supported by a memorial, numerously signed.

From an email received 18 October 2021.

My parents, Gordon and Elizabeth Loukes, lived there when I was born in 1953, in the downstairs flat. I believe the building was by then owned by Gravesend Football club who my dad played for.

The upstairs flat was occupied by another footballer and his large family, the Clarkes.

I have a lot of hazy memories of the interior of our flat which was spacious and where many of the pub fittings remained.

The door on the corner of the building was in our lounge but blocked up and unused. Access to both flats was through a metal door into a shared yard.

A noisy metal staircase gave access to the Clarkes accommodation - it was difficult to sneak up or down those stairs because of the noise!

As an only child, I spent most of my days being looked after and playing with the lively Clarke children and their mum, Peggy. We left Gravesend in early 1959 and there are no pictures from that place, and now my parents are both gone, no one to remember it with, so thanks again for the lovely reminder.

Jenny Silva.
