From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 9 July 1864.
William Mills, an engineer living at Deptford, was charged on Wednesday, with
being drunk, causing a disturbance at the "White Swan" public house, High
Street, and assaulting 272R in the execution of his duty.
The compliance said that he was called to quell a disturbance outside a
public house at Deptford, where he found that the prisoner was the cause of it,
and on desiring him to go home, the prisoner struck him a violent blow on the
jaw, causing him to fall backwards against the wall.
The accused, who was liberated on bail, when called upon for his defence,
made a stuttering noise with his mouth, not being able to articulate clearly.
Mr. Traill:- Surely you have been drinking this morning?
Prisoner:- It's no good telling his, but ....
Mr. Traill:- Take him out, he is not sober now.
The prisoner was removed until the business of the court was transacted,
where he was again brought in, and having expressed sorrow for his conduct, Mr.
Traill ordered him to pay a fine of 5s. and also to find bail in the sum of £10.
