Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but your help is definitely needed regarding it's history.

As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will be shown here.

Thanks for your co-operation.

From an email received 24 July 2015.

I am writing from Australia, and have been researching my family history from Appledore and the surrounding area in Kent. My 5 x great grandfather was William Dean (1724 – 1779) who was a victualler in Appledore when he died, and I am trying to establish where his pub or inn might have been located.

I have found reference to several documents from the National Archives which relate to William Dean, his wife Ann Richard Dean, and their children.

It appears that William Dean was the licensee of the “White Swan” in Appledore in 1779, and after his death the licence was transferred to William Woollett. The document also mentions a John Munk of Appledore being mortgagee of some of the properties including the “White Swan”.

The "Swan" mentioned a George Mauk/Munk/Monk as licensee in 1828.
