Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser. Monday 30 January 1871.

Caution to Frequenters of Public Houses. A Bexley case.

John Bateman, Alfred Bear, Philip Ladds, John Mills, Jonathan Bailey, and Charles Humphries, respectable looking men, were charged with being in the house of Henry Still, of the "Upton Tavern," Bexleyheath, during prohibited hours, on December 30th. Last Bench day the landlord was convicted of keeping his house open for the sale of beer etc, at 3:40 a.m., on December 30th, and was fined 5s. and costs.

The defence put forth by defendants was that as they were in the house by the special invitation of the landlord, they were not there unlawfully, and that the house was closed. They were, in fact, the private guests of the landlord.

Find 5s. each and costs.
