This was mentioned in a book called the "History of Strood" by Henry Smetham, published 1899 who says it was situated on the north-west end of Frindsbury Road.

The pub closed in 2005 and was converted into a convenience store.

 

Kentish Gazette, 26 May, 1781.

Robbery.

On Sunday morning, May 20, 1781, the house belonging to Mr. Bowman, the "Red Lion," at Strood, Kent, was broke open, and the following things taken therefrom, viz, a Pint Can, marked IMB in a Cypher, two Table Spoons RMB, one ditto IB, six ditto MW, a Pair of Sugar Tongs D, Ditto Hing Ditto, a Breast Buckle, Free-masonry; a Table Cloth, a White Shirt and two Necklaces, new; a Parcel of Gold Rings, 7 Guineas in Gold, a large Quantity of Silver, five or six Pounds of bad Silver, a Quantity of Half-pence, some Pairs and odd Buttons, a Parcel of Fathings, many other Articles, and a Quantity of Writing's.

Whoever will give Information of the Person or Persons who committed this robbery, so that he, she, or they, be brought to Justice, shall receive 5 guineas rewards.
