Originally known as the "Spearpoint Hotel" the premises were taken over by the Fullers Brewery and a competition set to rename the building after a complete renovation. This happened in 1999 and Henry Taggart won with the name "Pilgrim's Rest."

However, the name was changed once again, date as yet unknown, to the "Conningbrook."
