From an email sent, 27 March 2018.

Just came across your website regarding The Old English Gentleman in Church Street Tovil.

I’m currently researching my family history on my mother’s side, surname Rayfield.

The Old English Gentleman is mentioned in the various censuses.

I have a photo of the original owner James Rayfield, born 1798.

This photo has been in the family for ever, and it is known as "the four generations”, taken in about 1882.

Rayfield four generations 1882

It depicts James, who had the pub, and is first on your list, James his son, James his grandson, and Henry James his great grandson, who was my maternal grandfather.

Charles was another son who he must have left the pub to. No info on him unfortunately. He is the older gentleman seated with the smoker hat and stick.

Kind regards.

Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but your help is definitely needed regarding it's history.

As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will be shown here.

Thanks for your co-operation.
