The Kentish Mercury says it was a beer house under consideration for closure due to redundancy in 1908.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 18 June 1864.

Patsy Grane, a ragged urchin, living in King Street, Deptford, was charged with breaking a lamp, value £1, suspended in front of the "Lads of the Village" public house, King Street.

After hearing the evidence Mr. Maude said:- I think these republicans furnish their houses more magnificently than any other class of Her Majesty's subjects. The idea of placing such a valuable lamp in so low a neighbourhood! The landlord concurred in these remarks, and said he was afraid it was too good for the neighbourhood.

The prisoner was remanded.
