Above photo is said to be in Albury Street opposite the "King of Prussia" but is that an unknown pub on the left of the picture?

King of Prussia 2d coin 1868King of Prussia 2d coin 1868

Above coin circa 1868, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. A mid-Victorian 2d token issue by the licensee, George Burney. Tokens such as these were commonly issued by publicans and shopkeepers, in part payment of wages and invoices. The tokens could only be exchanged at the point of issue. In this instance, for food and drink at the King of Prussia. It's likely that this pub changed its name during WW1 when the patriotic battle cry was "Remember Britons, Nothing German!" The last King of Prussia was Kaiser Bill, Wilhelm II who was forced to abdicate in 1918. The King of Belgium during WW1 was Albert I.

At one time this was known as the "King of Belgian."

The address seems to have changed over the years for this one as well, it having been addressed as at 4, 5 & 6 Union Street, at 5 Creek Road by 1884, and 8 Creek Road by 1891, then 8 Albury Street by 1910.

Now part of Greater London, this area was indeed Kent before 1965. Hence, I will be adding information regarding this pub as and when I find or it is sent to me, but at present I'll be concentrating on the areas that are within the Kent boundary today.

Your help is appreciated, and every email is answered.
