PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1847-

(Name from)

Feathers

Closed 1922

1-3 Deptford Green (1 Church Street Pigot's Directory 1832-34)

St. Nicholas

Deptford

Has also been referred to as the "Plume of Feathers" and addressed as at 1 Church Street.

However, the addresses look to be different so perhaps there are two different pubs. One in St. Paul's and the other in St. Nicholas.

I believe the pub closed in 1922 and has since been demolished.

I have another pub listed called the "Feathers" and addressed at Deptford Bridge, which may well be the same pub.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 11 June 1864.

Unlawful Possession.

On Saturday, John Liddell, a carpenter living at 9, Knott's Terrace, Deptford, was charged on suspicion of stealing a plank, value 4s. 0d. the property of John Lightfoot, a licensed victualler, in Church Street.

The prisoner was seen by a young man named Lucas, in the prosecutors employ, carrying the plank in question up High Street, when he was stopped, and on being asked how he obtained it, replied that he brought the wood in the "Earl of Chatham." This he considered to be an unsatisfactory answer, and on his refusing to take it back to the prosecutor, he was given in custody.

In answer to the charge the prison admitted being in possession of the property, but alleged its value was not near that placed upon it by the prosecutor.

Mr. Traill convicted the accused in the penalty of 40s. for the unlawful possession.
