The building can be traced back to before 1715 when it changed name from the "Angel" to the "Dover Castle." In 1764 it changed name again this time to the "Duke of York," but that again changed in 1764 and only lasted until 1814 with this name. In 1814 it became the "Beefsteak House" before returning once again to the "Duke of York" around 1861, this time lasting till 1996 where it changed into the "Copperfield."

Traced back from a O.S. map of 1907 to date, but may be older.

The census of 1911 stated the premises had 8 rooms.

Changed name to the "Copperfield" in 1996.

Information received from Ian Goodrick tells me that the pub was operating under the name, possibly chain, of Beefeater, and also had the name of the "Old Beefsteakhouse" around 1995. That would explain the sign.
