Druid's Head

Above photo, date unknown. Showing what is obviously a fire on the top floor.

Probably the same pub as the "Ancient Druids" as early as 1826, the pub changed name to the "Druids Head" by 1832.

I am informed that the pub closed in 1971 and the whole street was demolished shortly afterwards.

Assaulting a Publican.

On Tuesday, a man giving the name and address of James Maddox, Patent Fuel Works, Stowage, Deptford, was charged with assaulting Mr. Landragin, landlord of the "Druids Head," Church Street, Deptford, and preventing P.C. 85R in the execution of his duty.

It appears the prisoner was drunk and causing a disturbance in the complainants house, and on his refusing to go outside, a constable was sent for, and upon his arrival, the prisoner attempted to bite him "more like a dog than a Christian."

Mr Maude to the prisoner:- Why did you not go out when they ask you?

Prisoner:- Because I was a fool and was drunk.

Mr. Maude:- I believe that is the best answer you could make, for it is the cause of all mischief. - "I was drunk." - you must be fined 20s.
