Royal Standard

From the Maidstone Telegraph, Rochester and Chatham Gazette, 18 February, 1860.

Mary Ann Jenner, aged 15, of Ryarsh, was charged with stealing a blanket, value 4s., the property of George Goldsmith, beer-shop keeper, King Street.

Mrs. Goldsmith, landlady of the “Royal Standard,” deposed to prisoner sleeping at her house on the nights of the 5th and 6th inst.
After the prisoner had left the house, witness missed a blanket, and on meeting the prisoner in High Street, on the following Saturday night, she accused her of stealing it, when the prisoner said she had taken it because she was hungry. The stolen property was subsequently found to have been pledged for 3s., at the Misses Flynn's pawnbroker, King Street.

The superintendent said he had heard a very bad account of the prisoner's career from Superintendent Hulse, of the Malling division. Several cases of felony had been proved against her. The prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour.
