PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1862

Iron Ship

1862+

(Name to)

61 (17) High Street

Gillingham

The address changed from 17 High Street to number 61 in 1881. I do not yet know whether this was a renumbering of the High Street or a new pub with the same name.

The "Iron Ship" was situated in Gillingham High Street close to the corner of Saxton Street. It opened in 1862, probably as "The Iron Ship". It seems the 'Old' was added by common usage to distinguish it from the nearby (and ironically, older) "New Iron Ship". It closed in the 1960s when the High Street was widened. The building that occupies its place was a supermarket (I think) in the 60s & 70s and then had a succession of other uses until it became an oriental restaurant in around 2000.

Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.
