171 London Road
Dunton Green
Above photo, date unknown, kindly sent by Phil Richards. |
Above postcard, circa 1935, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. On the face of
it, with the pub advertising Bushell's Westerham Ales, this photograph
should be late Victorian but clearly, it isn't! In 1897 Bushell's
acquired Watkin's Swan Brewery, also based in Westerham, and in 1899,
bought Smith's Old Brewery, Sevenoaks to form Bushell, Watkins & Smith.
B W & S's famous Westerham Ales were brewed at the Black Eagle Brewery.
It looks then, as though the pub's signage had not been changed when
this interwar photo was taken. |

The premises had a near miss during a raid in WW2 and the cottages to the
right were demolished, the pub surviving. Unfortunately the pub closed and
has since been converted and built onto and is now a private residence.
