Beehive

Above engraving, date unknown, I believe the brick-built building in the centre is the "Beehive."

The village of Hampton-on-Sea is an abandoned village close to Herne Bay. Formed in 1864 as a fishing village it was finally abandoned in 1916 due to costal erosion.

The "Beehive" was a brick built building situated amongst the fishing shacks.

HERNE BAY. CHARGE AGAINST A PUBLICAN

At the County Police Court, Canterbury, on Saturday, William Carter, landlord of the "Bee Hive,” Hampton, was charged with keeping open his house for the sale of beer at prohibited hours, on Sunday, the 10th of November.

P.C. Thornington, K.C.C., deposed that he went to the “Bee Hive” at Hampton on Sunday last, and saw the defendant draw a pint of porter for a man named Caustic, who paid defendant 2d. He had previously seen a man come out of the house with half-gallon of beer in a can.

Defendant denied that be sold the porter to Caustic, whom he called in support of his statement. Witness said he had repaired a whip for defendant, and he took it home on Sunday morning, and defendant gave him a pint of porter for the job. He could swear that he paid no money for the porter.

The constable, however, said he was positive he saw him pay 2d.

The Magistrates fined defendant 10s. and 10s. costs.
